LITTER TOKEN PILOT
LITTER TOKEN PILOT VERIFY 2 EARN FOR PLASTIC PICKERS
We conducted a pilot around Mbezi Beach area in Dar es salaam, where we selected 5 pickers; 3 male 2 female to experiment a #verify2earn model where they collected over 2000 black plastic bottles, verified the weighting , and was paid in the form of tokens which we then onboarded them on how to off-ramp into actual cash. We wanted to show them first hand the opportunities Web3 has towards unlocking alternative funding in the form of tokens and actually converting into cash. These black plastic bottles are still a massive problem in Tanzania and many developing countries. This is because they have little to no value and the plastic producing companies have no recycling mechanisms in place. Despite paying taxes, one might argue that these corporations and many more could still do more towards contributing towards a zero plastic and carbon free world.
Most of these waste pickers actually use it as a form of employment, an actual job to feed their families, take them to school and yet there are no proper measures in place to create sustainability around the jobs leading to volatile changes which end up costing the pickers. Furthermore, they are an important part of keeping our city environment clean.
